FULL SPEECH: Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Addresses Joint Session of Congress [VIDEO]

World • Views: 20,673

Youtube Video

One of the best speeches I’ve seen any politician give.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy finishes his historic visit to D.C. by addressing a joint session of Congress tonight.

President Zelenskyy receives a standing ovation, cheers, and greetings from both Republican and Democrat members of Congress.

‘I hope my words of respect and gratitude resonate in each American heart’ — At the beginning of his speech to Congress, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanks Speaker Nancy Pelosi for ‘bravely’ visiting Ukraine during the war.

Maybe it’s because I’m a haired male (I’ve sported a long ponytail most of my adult life) but the males in my family (and there’s a lot of them, brothers-in-law, cousins, etc,) have gone bald and just accepted it. I’ve found the whole hair-on-males-heads thing funny and strange for a long time.

Oh yeah, just remembered…

Back in 2003 a few days before my 21st birthday I was supposed to take a flight from Denver to Portland and then Portland to San Fransisco but something happened and I ended up on a direct flight from Denver to San Fransisco… on a 747 jet. That was my last (and only) ride on a 747.

I’m going bald on the left side of the top of my head way more than the right side. I keep it short in summer but winter It looks silly with long hair so I do a comb-over from the left side over the bald spot. it balances out pretty well.

Unfortunately for a female, I have gone quite thin on top, much the way a man would. My hair was always very thick, and it still is around the lower part. It’s discouraging, but I decided long ago I wasn’t going to fight aging. Good thing, as it is winning!

The scene where Saul Goodman does his combover:

Better Call Saul 6x09 Ending Scene “Saul Goodman arrives” Season 6 Episode 9 HD “Fun and Games”

One of the lovely things about the Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul universe is you can show this one scene to someone who’s never seen ANY of it and it’s just kind of a funny peculiar scene. You can do this with countless scenes in the universe. But once you’re in to it, and you know the context, it’s deep, fucked, entertaining as all hell.

A lot of snow is supposed to fall here on the western side of the Rocky Mountain Cordillera in the next day or two. We’ve had sub-zero temps at night when the skies are clear consistently for a couple weeks. The worst of the polar vortex is all on the east side of the cordillera, what with the heavy snow and high winds on top of an outside temp well below zero. Mercy…

re: #37 jaunte

Too early to tell. The snowfall has been remarkably consistent as opposed to recent years past. To be honest, it reminds me of winters when I was a kid. Enough snow to ski at the ski area at Thanksgiving and everything being open by Christmas. That’s what’s happening now. It’s cold, it’s snowing, the skiing gets better and better. I’m going to Arapahoe Basin on Friday, provided the roads are open when I drive there.

From where I see it, we need four or five 400” total snowfall/year years in a row to maybe bring Powell to 60%. We’re talking epic winter after epic winter for skiers in Colorado, and… bring it?

40

Weather report from the Denver metro here, before I go back and catch up on the last couple of threads.

Husband and I left home for a Hanukkah party at 4:17 pm; the car’s temp sensor said it was 50 degrees. The wind was from the west, gusting now and then but not that cold.

When we got to my semi-adopted sister’s apartment fifteen miles away and half an hour later, the temperature was 14 degrees and a blast of wind was coming straight from the east.

When we left the party at 7:30 the temp was zero and it was snowing.
Home now, -3 degrees, about 2-3” of snow. Going to go set the taps to a trickle and pile an extra quilt on the bed.

The party was a blast — worth the drive. The latkes didn’t turn out pretty, but wottheheck, they tasted good. But definitely one of the days when you watch the blue norther roll down in real time. Just glad to be home.

Stay safe, everyone caught in this!

This is funny, and yet sad. I knew a little boy from a troubled home who grew up bipolar, and he fought it every inch of the way. He’d take his meds for a while, and be charming and intelligent, but he said they made him feel “not himself, muffled” and he would stop and go wildly into self-destructive behavior. Eventually he could not live like that and killed himself. And as much as I wanted to just be AWAY from him when he was “loose”, and I still regret that little boy. He had such an unhappy life.

First concert without parents: Motorhead and Mercyful Fate. MF was an amazingly tight band, very good. Motohead’s rig blew the breakers a few times a few bars into Ace of Spades. After they go that figured out, some jerkoff was messing with Lemmy’s mike stand and it was moving all around. That was ill advised. Lemmy gave him the boot. Literally.

They won’t because they can’t. Why? Because the moment a journalist expresses skepticism or asks the “wrong” questions, a Repub cuts off all “access” and tells other Repubs to do the same, effectively locking that journalist out until they either apologize for doing their jobs or until their editor parks them at a desk while a journalist who won’t ask questions gets sent out instead.

So I did my first ham. Wifey Boo didn’t want bone in but she did want spiral sliced so I was able to negotiate a bone it. Did it in my air fryer with a glaze. Pretty good. Next time I will do a roast that isn’t pre cooked or marinated. This one had a touch too much salt for me but it tasted amazing. I used the ham juices to make a white gravy and that was a hit.

I bought a yellow pineapple from the farmer’s market a few weeks ago and we had leftover cranberry sauce from TGiving: this means I have to make chutney two ways.

So with the white gravy and two chutneys the fams was happy. There were meat sweats. I won White Elephant. I always do. It’s my jam.

long, but important read:
This little-known bottleneck is blocking clean energy for millions
Energy developers want to build a ton of wind and solar — they just can’t get it connected to the grid
wapo.st (free link)

To achieve America’s goal of shifting 80 percent of the country’s electricity away from fossil fuels by the end of the decade, there will have to be a massive transformation. That means solar farms peppering the landscape from California to New York; offshore wind turbines standing high above the waves off the coast of New Jersey; nuclear power plants emitting steam in rural areas. Together, these projects would have to add around 950 gigawatts of new clean energy and 225 gigawatts of energy storage to the grid.

And right now, projects accounting for at least 930 gigawatts of clean energy capacity and 420 gigawatts of storage are waiting to be built across the country.

They just can’t get connected to the grid.

A Ukrainian military captain asked Zelenskyy to give Biden a medal he had won for his service: ‘Give it to a very brave president’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented President Joe Biden with a medal at the request of the soldier it was awarded to.

Biden welcomed the Ukrainian president to the White House on Wednesday. During a meeting in the Oval Office, Zelenskyy said a Ukrainian soldier, who he described as a “real hero, a real captain,” asked him to pass along the award.

Zelenskyy said the soldier is the captain of the HIMARS battery, a unit that uses an advanced long-range weapons system from the US.

Yeah, I’ve been seeing the photos posted side-by-side for hours now of Zelensky’s meeting with Trump versus meeting with Biden. And he could not have looked more uncomfortable sitting across from Trump if he’d tried. Now seeing the context that Trump was basically sounding like a mob enforcer telling him it’d be a “real shame” if he couldn’t make a “deal” with Boss Putin, the discomfort makes a lot more sense.

I have not seen them at my local grocery store, or if they were there they must have been in such small quantities that they sold out quickly.

Also not found: a great many other Christmas confection specialties.

Local grocery store usually carries a larger variety of Russell Stover candy. While they do have the usual sale of box Russell Stover (half off), I notice that the selection of boxes is reduced. For example, no chocolate covered nuts boxes (though the company still sells them on their website: russellstover.com ).

I’ve noticed my local grocery store has definitely shifted its stocking strategy from a couple of years ago. Used to be there were a whole lot of “seasonal” items, now there are much fewer.

Also reduced are the canned soups, indeed all canned items.

The square footage of the store has not changed so I don’t know what they’ve added.

Health and Beauty, as they call it, was the growth area where I used to work. They did a remodel that made aisles narrower, shelf units much taller, and took out some big items, put in a lot of Health and Beauty and a little more frozen food.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not deliver his annual state of the nation address this year, the Kremlin announced Wednesday.

The statement comes after the Kremlin announced last week that Putin had canceled his traditional year-ending marathon press conference for the first time in his presidency.

According to the Russian constitution, the head of state must address both houses of parliament every year to deliver an update on the management of the state, social and economic programs, and plans for the coming year.

Putin delivered his last state of the nation address in April 2021, after deploying over 100,000 Russian troops to Ukraine’s border, a precursor to the war that erupted in February this year with Moscow’s full blown invasion.

While Putin hides himself in his luxury bunker out of fear from facing his own legislature, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy addresses a joint session of the US Congress. The contrast between Putin’s utter cowardice and Zelenskyy’s courage could not be more clear.

Hillary sat for 11 hours of testimony before a very clearly hostile committee that had every reason to catch her in a lie and yet never once invoked the 5A or refused to answer a question.

Meanwhile, Trump’s cronies went as far as invoking the 5A when asked their age (Roger Stone).

Sean Hannity was apparently willing to promote Donald Trump’s bogus election fraud claims on his Fox News show but unwilling to defend them while under oath.

The New York Times is reporting that when Hannity was deposed earlier this year as a part of a massive defamation lawsuit brought forward by Dominion Voting Systems against the right-wing network, he basically admitted his real thoughts about the 2020 election being stolen.

We haven’t had anything quite as weird at our city council meetings either. We have had debates about how many chickens you can have in town (6) and whether the village should put up chicken crossing signs on the streets (passed into law, signs are now up).

This probably ought to be on Christian Nightmares.

The Emerging Crazy Christian Trend Of Grave Sucking (World Religion News, April 18, 2018)

(Note to our Esteemed Host: Is it possible to remove Google Amp tags from URLs, used to promote pages and serve personalised adverts based on your browser, IP, and computer serial number? You can remove them manually. The Amp tag has been removed by me from this article.)

If you see someone lying on a grave, they may be engaged in a controversial form of Christian worship. It is called “grave sucking,” “grave soaking,” or “mantle grabbing.” The practice is angering Christians, confusing others, and probably making Atheists smirk.

Grave sucking involves laying across a grave of a holy figure. That could mean a preacher, evangelist, or saint. By laying across the grave you “suck” up the power of the Holy Spirit that the person had. You know, like the stealing the power of the dead from the Highlander movie/television franchise[.]

NFTs are apparently the modern-day indulgence.

Christians are going against the very foundation of the nation now.

Memorial and Remonstrance against Religious Assessments, [ca. 20 June] 1785 (James Madison, National Archives)

The most striking element in JM’s authorship of the Memorial and Remonstrance was the pains he took to keep the public ignorant of his heavy involvement in this battle over state-subsidized religion. So successful was he in maintaining anonymity that a few libraries still have a printed version with speculative attributions of the work to other public men. Although in 1786 printer Isaiah Thomas used JM’s name in the title when he issued A Memorial and Remonstrance … by his Excellency James Madison (Sabin 43719), JM himself waited until 1826 to make an explicit acknowledgment of his authorship. In reply to a query from George Mason’s grandson, JM recalled that Mason and George Nicholas “and some others, thought it adviseable, that a Remonstrance against the Bill should be prepared for general circulation & signature, and imposed on me the task of drawing up such a paper” (JM to George Mason [of Green Spring], 14 July 1826 [ViHi]). After forty years, the legislative undercurrents moving the General Assessment bill toward passage in 1785 had been forgotten, and the surviving documents standing alone did not tell the whole story.

The importance of formal religion in the 1780s is a concept difficult for a secularistic society to grasp. JM had a decent respect for the opinions of his peers and must have been aware of the intensity with which his Baptist and Presbyterian neighbors approached religious worship. He was also conscious of loyalties held by such patriots as Edmund Pendleton and Patrick Henry for the former established church, and of their conviction that taxes should be offered to all churches through a general assessment lest public morality languish.

Essentially it’s the same argument.

Most Christians to be fair consider this idolatry. Some however point to weak “evidence” that this is valid practice, citing 2 Kings 13:21

And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the sepulcher of Elisha. And when the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood up on his feet.

A break for people who purchase EV cars.

How some EV buyers could pocket an extra $3,750 in tax credits (CBS News, December 20, 2022)

Consumers in the market for an electric vehicle in early 2023 could get a bigger-than-expected tax credit come January 1 because of a delay by the Treasury Department in drawing up rules for the tax breaks.

The department late Monday said it won’t finish the rules that govern where battery minerals and parts have to be sourced until sometime in March.

The Inflation Reduction Act stipulates that a full $7,500 tax credit for electric-vehicle purchases are only available to EVs with batteries manufactured in the U.S., Canada or Mexico, while the batteries’ minerals and parts also have to come from North America to qualify.

But the Treasury Department said that rule won’t take effect until it completes its guidelines for component requirements in March — which means more vehicles in early 2023 could qualify for the full $7,500 tax credit than would otherwise. Once the rules are in effect, many vehicles may only qualify for half the credit, or $3,750, because their batteries are made or sourced outside North America.

Health warning. There is no safe level of lead in food or water.

Heavy metals found in dark chocolate including Trader Joe’s and Hershey’s (CBS News, December 19, 2022)

Long viewed as healthier than other sweet treats, some brands of dark chocolate contain potentially dangerous amounts of heavy metals, according to research released on Thursday by Consumer Reports. (link goes to Consumer Reports)

Scientists at the nonprofit advocacy organization recently measured the amount of heavy metals in 28 popular brands of dark chocolate bars and found cadmium and lead in all of them. For 23 of the bars, consuming just an ounce a day would put an adult over a level for at least one of the metals that could be harmful, CR said. Five of the bars were above those levels for both cadmium and lead.

Long-term exposure to even small amounts of heavy metals can lead to a slew of health issues, including developmental problems and brain development in young children, experts say.

“But there are risks for people of any age,” Tunde Akinleye, the CR food safety researcher who led the testing, said in a statement. Frequent exposure to lead in adults can lead to nervous system problems, hypertension, immune system suppression, kidney damage and reproductive issues, he noted.

Lake Says She’ll ‘Take Anybody’ As Lawyers Drop Out Of Beleaguered Election Suit (Talking Points Memo, December 20, 2022)

Unsuccessful gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, who staked much of her 2022 election bid on peddling Donald Trump’s big lie, admitted Tuesday that she’s having trouble retaining lawyers in her quest to get her own election loss overturned.

“We had attorneys who did walk away because the left is threatening them with their ability to make a living and practice law,” she said Tuesday to Charlie Kirk at his Turning Point USA conference in Phoenix. “And some of our attorneys said ‘look, I got mouths to feed, I can’t do this case, I don’t want to be sanctioned.’”

“I got to a point where I said ‘I’ll take anybody,’” she said to laughter. “We’ll take Better Call Saul to come in here.”

Her case likely did not become any more appealing to prospective lawyers after a Superior Court judge in Maricopa County dismissed eight of the 10 claims in her lawsuit this week.

The snow has finally abated here, so later this morning (when the neighbors have all gotten up and gotten going, so as to be polite) I will be wheeling out the snowblower and clearing the driveway. While neither Mrs. Fish nor I have anywhere specific to be today, I do need to get the garbage and recycling cans down to the end of the driveway for the weekly haul-away, and I don’t particularly feel like trying to drag them through 6ish inches of powder to do so.

most of that income was from the final bit of the huge inheritance that financed much of his business career

$14 million in cap gains from the sale of his father’s 1970s investment in the Brooklyn housing development of Starrett City.

This little-known bottleneck is blocking clean energy for millions
Energy developers want to build a ton of wind and solar — they just can’t get it connected to the grid
wapo.st (free link)

Running power lines is a tough task, especially in urban areas, or where they connect with the existing grid. That’s why some of the lowest hanging fruit is converting existing natgas or coal plants to solar or wind makes sense, since you’ve got the land and the grid is ready-baked for energy production.

The problem is that you run out of that kind of property pretty quick, and not all existing power generation plants are where you need the energy, or where it is most efficiently produced.

The grid was never designed to be fragmented or with so many different generation facilities baked into the calculus (where the ISOs have to manage supply with demand to keep the lights on or else power cycles can fry everyone’s gear).

Think of it this way. Starett City was a working class neighborhood where lower and middle class folks could live. That’s where Trump Sr made his money.

Junior decided to go “luxury” and the reality is that he’s lost money doing it every step of the way, despite giving airs of being a successful businessman. Trump Tower isn’t generating revenues the way you’d think, nor are any of his other properties. But he still manages to funnel everything to himself personally so it looks like he’s filthy rich, when he’s just filthy.

There’s a creature in the open space behind my fence. I can’t match it’s small voice double bark to anything. I’m assuming it is a mammal. It doesn’t sound like a fox, coyote, raccoon, possum, bobcat, squirrel, dog, cat, or any other local critter.

Around my area, the general rule is that if you hear weird noises coming from out of the dark, it is most likely a fox. They have a large array of very unusual calls.

We are just starting to get owls, hawks and even Bald Eagles back to the region, though.

Wanna know why GOPers have stopped talking about gas prices?

Because they’ve plummeted, and that has a add-on effect to reducing inflation rates too - as CPI takes fuel costs into effect. Demand is still high so inflation is still above historic levels, but the economy continues chugging along faster than the Fed would like to see, so we’ll likely see even more interest rate hikes in coming months.

The problem for the GOP is that their entire narrative is that the economy sucks, when there’s really no evidence for it and they’re just hoping no one notices that the GOP is actively rooting for the economy to collapse so that the GOP can return to power.

My plumbing is starting to object to the cold. It’s -16°F and the toilet line froze. I have to use a bucket to flush it.

If you can, turn the water off to that pipe. Once it thaws, the pipe is likely compromised, and you may have a water leak.

After that, you may want to inspect as much of your plumbing as possible.

In 2018, Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) became the first senator to give birth in office after using in vitro fertilization (IVF) and senators across party lines joined Duckworth in celebrating her child’s birth. Four years later, Duckworth’s Republican colleagues—namely Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MO)—have blocked the Right To Build Families Act, a bill introduced by Duckworth and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) to create a federal right to use IVF and other fertility technologies, and prohibit any restrictions on individuals seeking fertility treatments.

On Tuesday, when Duckworth requested to pass the bill through unanimous consent, Hyde-Smith objected to it. “The same Republicans who claim to ‘defend family values’ just blocked my bill to protect the right to start a family through IVF,” Duckworth said in a tweet shortly after. The Illinois Democrat called right-wing threats to IVF “the ultimate, nightmarish blend of hypocrisy and misogyny.” In a statement shared with Jezebel, Murray called Hyde-Smith’s vote against their “commonsense” bill “outrageous,” and a result of Republicans’ “extreme stance on reproductive rights.”

This whole episode has also pointed out that having a law intended to reduce or stop corruption is meaningless if the officials designated to enforce it refuse to do so.

Which is why the rot goes much deeper than Trump. His Treasury Secretary refused to enforce the law. Shall means shall. And if the supposed only solution for corruption that high up is impeachment and the group that needs to do the impeaching simply looks the other way (repeatedly!) it’s another indication that the problem is more than Trump as well.

Yup, the question of Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

What happens when the people who are supposed to enforce the rule of law are corrupt.

In the end, it falls back onto the responsibility of the people. Which gets extremely messy and bloody at times. Which, I guess, is the penalty for allowing things to get out of control in the first place.

One big problem with creating a new enforcement group and assigning them the responsibility to enforce the rule of law on the political classes is that the enforcement agency can also be corrupted.

Another is that the agency will be expected to be productive. So, they will have an organizational imperative to take actions in every administration. Whether or not there is a real problem.

“A member of the rock band Journey has served a fellow bandmate with a cease-and-desist order for performing their hit Don’t Stop Believin’ with several high-profile Republicans for Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago last month, calling the performance ‘harmful’ to the band,” reported Sian Cain. “Keyboardist Jonathan Cain, guitarist Neal Schon and singer Steve Perry co-wrote the 1981 song, which returned to public consciousness 30 years later when it was used in the final episode of The Sopranos.”

According to the report, Cain came to be close to the former president through his wife, televangelist Paula White-Cain, who has acted as Trump’s spiritual adviser.

“In November, Cain performed Don’t Stop Believin’ with Republicans Marjorie Taylor Greene, Kimberly Guilfoyle and Kari Lake for Trump at his Florida resort,” said the report. “On Wednesday, it was revealed by Variety that Schon’s attorney had issued a cease-and-desist letter to Cain over the performance.”

Pause for a moment to think about how remarkable this is. Cramer and Brown are not staff members at The Daily Beast, or professors at Berkeley, or members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. The two men are basically on the same page with McCarthy & Co. on policy, and in particular on economic policy. And yet, both Cramer and Brown (and unnamed other Republican officeholders they both allude to) have absolutely zero confidence in the ability of the soon-to-be House Republican majority to govern. And we’re not even talking about “it would be nice” stuff, like legislation on abortion or immigration or taxes, or any other Republican issues. We’re talking about basic and essential functions of government, like adopting a budget.

Barring something of a miracle, the House is going to be a train wreck next year. Insiders think so and non-insiders think so. Democrats think so and Republicans think so. Politicians think so and pundits think so. And, like an actual train wreck, all these folks see what’s coming and can’t do a damn thing to stop it

It is that the GOP chose to do nothing. The sabotage and obstructionism is the fucking point.

What better way of sabotaging Biden and democracy than thwarting basic functions of government, and the GOP elected these people to do just what they are going to do - block functioning government and the chaos is the whole fucking point.

Stochastic terrorism? Insurrectionists pulling the strings on the GOP leadership? Infighting that may elevate a known white supremacist to the seat (Scalise), over craven coward McCarthy? Chinese vaccines weren’t nearly as effective as some of the others in wide use, like the Pfizer or Moderna, and China didn’t import from elsewhere.

They also haven’t stressed boosters to same degree as elsewhere. China’s vaccines aren’t nearly as good against omicron as others, and the bivalent boosters are not getting to China either.

On top of that, China is suppressing the body counts from covid, as they’ve done all along.

From what I understand, that is indeed the consensus of Western experts.

A big frustration, as you note, is that Chinese official Covid statistics are considered generally untrustworthy.

Good question. You would not have to play every week. We’d just run one tourney a week, if you can make it, you make it. Some people play often, some will be occasional.

The group I’m in only has 10 folks. 4 of us play pretty regular, 2 are there most of the time, a few rarely ever play. It’s casual.

All anyone has to do is look at the hospitals and morgues and cemeteries, and you see a significant uptick in deaths and hospitalizations, and it can be attributed to just one thing:

covid.

They aren’t reporting a new disease causing those outcomes - which means that it’s got to be covid.

I’d worry that with so many getting infected in short order that we’d see a new variant emerge, and that it isn’t covered by the vaccines.

Yes, new variants could be a very big problem.

Another major worry I have read about is what happens to the medical infrastructure when it is overwhelmed by massive numbers of sick people. A lot of the Chinese government claims regarding the size and capabilities of their medical infrastructure are already suspect.

In the US we got a huge wave of people disillusioned with the current system due its failures, and looking for alternatives. And grifters quite willing to support them.

Oh my Check out the list of demands Diva Natasha Sinema laid out for her staff!

The Incredible 37-Page Guide for Staffing Sen. Kyrsten Sinema

Aides to the Arizona senator were expected to get her groceries, fix her internet, and learn her very specific preferences for airline seats, according to an internal memo.

One section of the staffer guide explains that the senator’s executive assistant must contact Sinema at the beginning of the work week in Washington to “ask if she needs groceries,” and copy both the scheduler and chief of staff on the message to “make sure this is accomplished.” It specifies Sinema will reimburse the assistant through CashApp. The memo also dictates that if the internet in Sinema’s private apartment fails, the executive assistant “should call Verizon to schedule a repair” and ensure a staffer is present to let a technician inside the property.

The Senate ethics handbook states that “staff are compensated for the purpose of assisting Senators in their official legislative and representational duties, and not for the purpose of performing personal or other non-official activities for themselves or on behalf of others.”

Craig Holman, a congressional ethics expert with the nonprofit group Public Citizen, said Sinema’s apparent demands that staffers conduct personal tasks amount to a clear violation of Senate ethics rules, and would typically warrant a formal reprimand by the Senate Ethics Committee.

FDA and USDA have implemented a Closer to Zero action plan to reduce heavy metal contaminants (esp. lead) in food. The biggest focus is on baby and toddler foods - the group most affected by these contaminants. As detection methods get better, we see more and more contaminant in everything; of course, there is no such thing as zero, but good manufacturers are now on alert that they must try and achieve better.

Press releases for the two agencies — we held public meetings about this and while the Democrats are still in charge, we have a chance of making this better. The next republican administration could wreak havoc, though. Tangerine mussolini’s admin did it’s best to hamstring all food safety initiatives, including prematket aspects which are codified in 21 USC(the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act), and the agencies in general.

Trump’s Income as President Was Windfall from Father

“At first glance, the income-tax data released this week by a House committee seems to show a turnaround in 2018 for former President Donald Trump. After a decade in which he declared no taxable income, his 2018 return reported taxable income of more than $24 million. He paid nearly a million dollars in federal income taxes,” the New York Times reports.

“In fact, his year in the black appears to have resulted largely from the final windfall of the vast inheritance that financed much of his business career — more than $14 million in gains from the sale of his father’s 1970s investment in the Brooklyn housing development of Starrett City.”

That ship has had more fires than anyone can count at this point. The ship is a disaster, and the only reason they’re working on it at all is because the Russian Navy needs a surface ship to be their flagship. This ship is a mess, and has been from the outset.

Its engines are a mess, and it belches black smoke while underway, making it easy to spot from a distance. Poor maintenance has caused all kinds of fires and safety incidents.

Add this to the list, and it isn’t clear if this will delay putting it back to sea. Again. As it is, the ship may not get back to see before 2024 at the earliest.

American strategy since WWII is to fight “over there”, i.e., forward deployment.

The Ukrainians are paying a high price to fight Russian nationalism.

We, the US, have reasons to not want Russian nationalism to flourish.

Hence it is in our best interest to support the Ukrainians.

This is not hard for anyone who has a shred of historical knowledge, but in the land of the know-nothings knowledge about the past is rare.

Unfortunately too many MAGAts are supporters of Putin and Russia these days. They may know history — Putin is a racist oligarch and so is their orange Messiah. Many of these supporters would have objected to our participation in WW2 against Hitler.

18 degrees now in Addison (that’s the North Dallas area for you non-locals), and it is now snowing. According to what I’ve heard from our local weathermen its apparently lake-effect snow, a term that I thought I’d never hear in a Dallas weather forecast.

Dallas has several decent-sized lakes- both natural and man-made - surrounding the area. This snow is probably coming off of Lewisville Lake but folks over to the east of here will get same from Lake Ray Hubbard.

There are at least three modest size lakes in the DFW area that could be triggers for lake effect snow.

Here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, practically all snow is lake effect snow.

/half - there are several lakes here that are large enough to provide lake effect snow, but by no means all. I happen to live in between two of them, but the wind direction very rarely causes true lake effect.

re: #330 Eclectic Cyborg

Bold of you to assume they would care.

A less snarky answer: there’s probably a cleaning team that cleans multiple stores each night (I know this is how In-n-Out works since I knew a guy that used to work on one of those teams, I’m assuming most of the other corporate chains have something similar). There’s also probably a couple of people who work there in the kitchen and someone that resembles a manager. But the idea is probably “we can have these machines instead of someone at the counter and someone at the drive thru window and save a bit of money in the long run”

At the McDonald’s locations I’ve been inside recently, people still cook the food (and presumably clean the equipment), but the registers are closed; orders are placed at the kiosk, and then it’s cooked to order and the kitchen staff bring it to the counter for you to pick up.

I have a machine, but I couldn’t keep it going - I think the fuel line was frozen. So, I shoveled. Seven inches of fluffy snow is pretty easy - at least easier than the wet two inches of snow I pushed off the driveway last week. I decided to try the snowblower again when I got to the end where the snowplow had piled the snow eighteen inches deep. It took about fifteen minutes of messing around but I finally got the fuel line to flow enough to finish the task. It wasn’t so bad.

The now-neglected Johnson & Johnson single-shot vaccine was not an mRNA vaccine. The anti-vaxxers used the excuse that it was temporarily withdrawn from service while they studied some worrying apparent side effects. I believe those fears wound up unfounded, but of course, any excuse to hate the COVID vaccines.

This is why, at the end of the appropriate season, I drain the fuel tanks on my seasonal equipment and run the carburetors dry. It’s a short procedure and leads to much less hassle in maintenance. I also put a fuel stabilizer in my small engine gas can when I fill it up.

I usually do this too but I’m not 100% sure I did that last year on the snowblower.

ETA: My wife did use the snowblower last month so I know it was working fairly well this season. I’m going to blame her instead of my poor maintenance and the cold. I’m certain that will go over well.

There’s a good article about the speech at The Atlantic. It’s by Frum and I still don’t really trust him (maxim 29… ) but it is a good piece.

“So much in the world depends on you.”

Of all the many moving words in President Volodymyr Zelensky’s speech to a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress, those eight may have been the most urgent and important.

Zelensky came to Washington to speak for his nation. He came to Washington to ask for assistance. But above all, he came to Washington to recall Americans to themselves. He came to say, My embattled people believe in you. Embedded in his words of trust was a challenge: If we believe in you, perhaps you can again believe in yourselves?

Zelensky Recalled Us to Ourselves

A senior German official said on Thursday Twitter should join other tech firms in being directly monitored by the European Commission, saying the company’s erratic behaviour under new owner Elon Musk posed a threat to free speech.

Sven Giegold, the state secretary in charge of competition policy at Germany’s economy ministry, pointed to Twitter’s abrupt suspension of journalists’ accounts and restrictions on the access to some links.

In a letter to two European Commissioners, Giegold called on the EU to launch an investigation and said the Commission should act to prevent what he called Twitter’s “anti-competitive behaviour”.

A while ago, the cops were knocking at my neighbor’s door (not unusual) until they gave up, now the fire alarms are being tested.

re: #391 Belafon

Being able to watch TNG (and The Twilight Zone) on demand is about the only reason I would subscribe to Paramount+. I’m curious about some of their other Trek-related offerings, but not curious enough to subscribe (yet). I still have digital copies of almost all the TNG episodes from when I was sailing the seven seas with a yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum, but they are 420p DVD rips.

re: #382 Eclectic Cyborg

Reminds me of something Chris Rock said when he covered the GOP Convention for the Jay Leno show back in 1992.
“I haven’t seen this many white people in one place since the Osmond family guested on Hee-Haw.”

Do I even want to know the story behind the photo?

I don’t remember what it was about other than it being rather stupid.

Exactly! Russia can’t be emboldened to invade its neighbors and commit war crimes with no pushback or opposition.
